Keep in mind that if we have too many questions during thesession, I may have to stop answering questions until the very end iftime runs short.
Some participants are on a tight schedule and I want to make sure that all the information gets out.
Don't hesitate to type in your questions no matter what happens.
If your question does not get answered right away, rest assuredthat I will answer all un-answered questions at the end or maybe evenlater in this session.
I will be keeping a record of the unanswered questions on my computer.

My name is David Bailey.
My wife Jennifer and I are web developers.
We have been involved with this business for nearly 10 years together.
Our company, Sand Dollar Digital Design, currently hosts over 150 web sites on our servers in Las Vegas.
We have seen a lot of growth and change in the World Wide Web overthe years and have learned a lot about how to get web sites listed onSearch Engines.
This is the subject we will be dealing with tonight.
18:11:21 [DiscussionOutline]
I will be using Paragraph numbers and sub paragraph numbers to help keep things organized.
If you are unsure of where in the outline we are, follow the Roman numerals, letters and numbers.
When this session is over, I will be posting the complete discussion in the Q & A section of my web site
To find it, go to http://www.s-3d.com, go to the lower right corner and click "Computer and Web Site Questions".
You will see a place to search that says, "Enter your complete question here:".
Enter "Online Web Promotion Seminar" and you will see this dialog in the search results.
Click the "MORE" link to see the complete dialog.

18:12:00 [DaveBailey] Just in time.
18:12:09 [sswanson] Hi!
18:12:20 [DiscussionOutline]
This first section is the largest part of this session because of it's importance.
18:12:58 [DaveBailey] We have just covered some 'rules and guide lines for the session. feel free to skim the red text.
18:13:08 [DiscussionOutline]
I. Steps to make your site get better position on search engines.
I will be mentioning Google a lot in thissession, but everything I say about Google applies to Yahoo, MSN, AOLand many of the other thousands of search engines on the web.
18:13:34 [DiscussionOutline]
A. Google and other search engines assign a number to the importance, relevance and freshness of every site listed in their database.
1. Google calls it PageRank. A scale from zero to ten.
a. The higher the number, the better your listing in their search results.
b. If you get the Google Toolbar from theGoogle site, you can turn on the PageRank icon and it will tell you thePage Rank of any page you visit.
c. This is informative to let you know how your site fits in with the rest of the web.
18:14:19 [DiscussionOutline]
2. For small companies, a ranking of 4 or 5 is a great ranking.
a. Achieving a 4 or 5 ensures that you will be receiving traffic from Google.
b. If your site has a 4 or 5 or even higher, you can know you are doing almost best you can with your site.
18:14:31 [Jennifer] dave what is the purpose of page rank?
18:15:05 [toni] am i missing something? not getting anything
18:15:12 [DaveBailey] It tells Googles database how 'important' your page is on the grand scheme of things
18:15:35 [DaveBailey] Toni, do you see the red text?
18:15:39 [md] I am not getting anything either
18:15:54 [deboo] I only see 1 red sentence
18:16:03 [toni] yep but only got one line
18:16:20 [DaveBailey] Okay,
18:16:23 [md] me too
18:16:34 [Jennifer] ok hold on
18:16:39 [DaveBailey] sorry about that. What one line did you get?
18:17:03 [toni] this first section is the largest part of this session because of it's importance.
18:17:15 [md] same sentence
18:17:17 [deboo] The first section is. . .

18:20:20 [sswanson] yes
18:20:29 [DaveBailey] Okay, I will be doind this another way....
18:20:40 [DaveBailey] I. Steps to make your site get better position on search engines.
18:20:50 [DaveBailey] I will be mentioning Google a lot in this session, buteverything I say about Google applies to Yahoo, MSN, AOL and many ofthe other thousands of search engines on the web.
18:21:05 [DaveBailey] A. Google and other search engines assign a number to the importance, relevance and freshness of every site listed in their database.

18:25:08 [DaveBailey] Steve and Sandy, you guys still there?
18:26:25 sswanson exits from this room
18:26:32 sswanson enters this room
18:26:41 [deboo] nothing is going through to you
18:26:58 [deboo] except that of course
18:27:21 [DaveBailey] Okay. does anyone have the part one outline?
18:27:31 tigger exits from this room
18:27:39 tigger enters this room
18:27:40 [deboo] yes
18:27:48 tigger exits from this room
18:27:49 [sswanson] yes
18:28:25 [DaveBailey] Okay, Jen says we can talk about it, but I will continue posting the outline.
18:28:43 [DaveBailey] 3. Many of our very active sites accomplish no more than a 3 onGoogle and they do a lot of business from their site.
18:29:25 [DaveBailey] a. A 2 or 3 cannot be reached with no updates or changes.
18:29:32 [DaveBailey] b. Sites that never change can reach a score as high as2, but other factors within the site must be well done.
18:29:40 [DaveBailey] 4. Numbers 6 and higher are typically accomplished by largercompanies that employ a full time staff that actively updates, monitorsand keeps their site moving.
18:29:58 [DaveBailey] Enough on page rank... how to get it is why we are here
18:30:02 [Jennifer] Lets talk aboutwhat google uses to rank sites
18:30:35 [Jennifer] keywords are very important along with the title
18:31:06 [Jennifer] we have all used key words to search for what we want on yahoo and google
18:31:21 stalker enters this room
18:32:52 [DaveBailey] Thesekeywords and how they work is the most important for your site positionand your page rank can be effected by how you use them
18:33:32 [DaveBailey] But it is important to understand how Google looks at your site.
18:34:09 [DaveBailey] We will get to that in just a few minutes
18:34:23 [DaveBailey] B. Keeping your site fresh and updated helps the position of your site on the search engines for the long term.
18:34:36 [DaveBailey] 1. Google will visit your site after we get it promoted andindex the key words throughout your site in their database.
18:34:51 [DaveBailey] a. Your site is automatically queued in their system to be revisited in about 45 days.
18:34:58 [DaveBailey] b. When Google comes back, if your site has NO CHANGES,it will not re-indexed and it will be requeued for another 45 to 60days in the future.
18:35:05 msjulie enters this room
18:35:17 surfsiderv enters this room
18:35:19 [DaveBailey] Here it comes
18:35:27 [DaveBailey] c. THEN YOUR SITE GETS MOVED DOWN THEIR LIST!!!
18:35:49 [DaveBailey] 2. If Google comes back and sees changes on your first page, they will re-index your site, making it fresher in their database andmove you UP their list.
18:36:05 [DaveBailey] a. They cool part is that they re-schedule their next visit for about 30 days.
18:36:06 [Jennifer] hi julie, stalker and surfside
18:36:15 [DaveBailey] b. If Google comes back in 30 days and your site ischanged again, Google re-indexes your site, making it fresher in theirdatabase and again, you move UP their list again.
18:36:28 [DaveBailey] d. If your site keeps changing, they will visit your moreand more often until they get to once a day, depending on the amount ofchange on your site.
18:36:57 [DaveBailey] We have sites that change frequently and google comes back nearly every day.
18:37:27 [DaveBailey] These are the sites that do well on the search engine results
18:37:27 [msjulie] Hope I learn something, Jennifer
18:37:50 [DaveBailey] Does anyone have any questions so far?
18:37:51 [Jennifer] Many of you have text boxes on the front page and your chageing that front box, helps with your search engine rank
18:38:38 [DaveBailey] We will talk about those text boxes and how to get them working for you in just a moment
18:39:15 [msjulie] Should key words be in those boxes?
18:39:18 [DaveBailey] Here is Jennifers specialty. You folks should talk to her about keywords sometime.
18:39:25 [DaveBailey] C. Another way to get on Google is with Relevant Keywords within your site.
18:39:32 md enters this room
18:39:37 [DaveBailey] 1. Keywords should be located in the meta tags of your site.
18:39:49 [DaveBailey] a. You can look for the meta tags on your own or ANY web site. To do this, follow these steps:
18:40:00 [DaveBailey] i. Use your browser and go to the page you want to look at the meta tags for.
18:40:11 [DaveBailey] ii. Click the VIEW menu at the top of your screen or Right Click any blank area of the page.
18:40:15 [DaveBailey] iii. Click "Page Source", "View Page Source" or "Source".
18:40:20 [DaveBailey] iv. A window will pop up with the HTML code forthe page. Your meta tags should be near the top for the page. They looklike this:
18:40:41 [DaveBailey] iv.
18:41:20 [DaveBailey] v.
18:41:31 [DaveBailey] vi. If your site is missing the meta tags or theyare located too far down the page, they are in-effective.
18:41:59 [msjulie] Keywords do have to be listed in the text on that page, don't they?
18:42:24 [DaveBailey] Yes... That is a great point
18:42:56 [DaveBailey] You can always double check us and make sure your keywords are the best they can be.
18:43:20 [DaveBailey] We invite your input here.
18:43:29 [msjulie] How do we do that?
18:43:56 [DaveBailey] Keywords for us can be hard, but if you see something missing from your keywords, let us know
18:44:02 [Jennifer] You do not have to have all of your key words in the text but it is a good idea to have the top ten key word mingles in
18:44:11 [surfsiderv] I do not know my keywords?? please
18:44:37 [Jennifer] I use key words also in the tile for an extra boost
18:45:03 [DaveBailey] Charles, go to any page on your site and follow the steps i - vi above to see them
18:45:05 [msjulie] What's the tile?
18:45:43 [DaveBailey] b. The first 10 keywords/key phrases. are the mostimportant, others may be used, but the farther into the list of words, the less important it becomes to the search engines.
18:45:43 [md] Are most people paying per hit to be 1st with the search engines
18:46:22 [DaveBailey] I don't know about most, many do pay for their hits.
18:46:23 [Jennifer] the title is in the blue bar at the top of the explorer window
18:46:50 [DaveBailey] I will get to paid hits in a few minutes in
18:47:05 [msjulie] I thought maybe you meant TITLE!
18:47:06 [DaveBailey] b. The first 10 keywords/key phrases. are the mostimportant, others may be used, but the farther into the list of words, the less important it becomes to the search engines.
18:47:12 [DaveBailey] i. Your keywords will actually appear more likekey phrases. They will be grouped using commas with sets of words thatyour potential customers may use to find you.
18:47:17 [DaveBailey] ii. Keep in mind, though, if you use the same wordmore than about 5 times throughout the key phrases or the searchengines will consider it SPAMming their index and you run the risk ofgetting on a black list.
18:47:22 [DaveBailey] iii. Getting on a search engines BLACK LIST maymean it can take years to get back on the search engine. We have seenthis happen.
18:47:49 [DaveBailey] Now the title
18:47:58 [Jennifer] Ok I will watch my typing sorry
18:48:16 [DaveBailey] 2. Most important keywords also should be used in the TITLE of every page on your site.
18:48:24 [DaveBailey] a. Yeah, that's right, you need to figure out whatkeywords are the most important. List them out from the most to leastimportant. This is a hard thing to do, but take some time and do it.
18:48:29 [DaveBailey] b. Your title should start with the more important wordsfirst, the followed by the next words, if possible.
18:48:35 [DaveBailey] c. Your title must be proper english with sentencestructure or, again, it could be viewed as SPAMming the search engines
18:48:41 [DaveBailey] d. Your title cannot be too long or it will hurt. 15-20 words or 100 characters is ideal.
18:49:05 [DaveBailey] This is another area we invite and appreciate your input.
18:49:35 [DaveBailey] We do the best we can, but sometimes you folks know better what words are more important.
18:50:09 [DaveBailey] All the sites on our server have statistics pages that tell you what search phrases are used to find your site
18:50:26 [msjulie] Is Rugging With Julie my title
18:50:31 md enters this room
18:50:34 [DaveBailey] We can show you how to get to that part of your site via email.
18:51:10 [deboo] Can we access the statistics page?
18:51:15 [DaveBailey] These statistics sometimes help you decide which words may be more important
18:51:26 [msjulie] I would like to see that!
18:51:41 [DaveBailey] Yes, Sandy, I will send you your stats link via email
18:52:39 [Jennifer] Rugging With Julie - How to make Rugs instructional video, kits & supplies
18:52:47 [DaveBailey] Okay, Julie already made this next point, lets see it in action
18:53:09 [Jennifer] Julie this is the tile on your front page, the rest of them have different titles
18:53:41 [Jennifer] title
18:53:48 [DaveBailey] Different titles on each page is not bad, infact it gives you an opportunity to use more keywords
18:54:03 [DaveBailey] 3. The keywords are more effective when they also appear through out the text on your site
18:54:10 [DaveBailey] a. This is also an opportunity to get more search terms on your site.
18:54:33 [DaveBailey] i. Example: http://www.paradisefitnesscenter.com'
18:54:42 [DaveBailey] ii. Four weeks ago, they had 'standard' text ontheir site. It was the text Jennifer and I got from their brochures, good for printed matter but not designed for the web.
18:54:51 [Jennifer] Each page has a different subject matter so the title and keywords should be tweaked for that page
18:55:01 [DaveBailey] iii. Karen spent a week adding text and rewordingexisting text to include words like Port Aransas, Health, Fitness,Coastal Bend, Personal Trainers, Gym, Circuit Equipment.
18:55:07 [DaveBailey] iv. In two weeks time, her ranking on Google wentfrom below 100 to top place for combinations of these search words.
18:55:30 [DaveBailey] v. Try searches on Google without the quotes for "port aransas personal trainer" http://www.google.com/search?num=100&hl=en&lr=&rls=GGGL%2CGGGL%3A2005-09%2CGGGL%3Aen&q=port+aransas+personal+trainer&btnG=Search
18:55:59 [DaveBailey] v. "port aransas fitness" http://www.google.com/search?num=100&hl=en&lr=&rls=GGGL%2CGGGL%3A2005-09%2CGGGL%3Aen&q=port+aransas+fitness&btnG=Search
18:57:08 [DaveBailey] You folks can click tose links and see that port a fitness center is now high on the lists
18:57:26 [DaveBailey] That last one, especially
18:58:14 [DaveBailey] They are number one on my screen, but that may differ from search to search
18:58:16 [msjulie] So when you use different search words the http comes up in different ranks.
18:58:39 [DaveBailey] Yep... every search is different
18:59:21 [DaveBailey] It is odd, these searches I just gave you shows them first on my screen but Jens screen shows them a bit lower on the list
18:59:38 [msjulie] I think you'ver helped me a lot. I'm glad tutoring was over early so I could join you.
18:59:55 [Jennifer] The key to promotion is figuring out what words and phrases people will use to fins your website
18:59:57 [DaveBailey] vi. When it comes to your companies personal text, we can only take you so far.
19:00:10 [Jennifer] find your site
19:00:14 [DaveBailey]
